Welcome

Welcome to the homepage of the Denbukan Dojo / Indianapolis Iaido & Jujutsu. We are dedicated to the study and preservation of the traditional martial arts and ways of Japan. We offer instruction in the following arts:

Jujutsu:

Jujutsu is a traditional Japanese self-protection art descended from the empty-hand combat methods of the samurai. At the Denbukan Dojo, we offer instruction in the Dentokan branch of Hakko-ryu Jujutsu, commonly known as Dentokan Jujutsu or Aikijujutsu.  This school traces its lineage to the Daito-ryu tradition of Aikijujutsu and includes sophisticated strikes, joint locks, takedowns, throws, chokes and other methods to humanely control one or more aggressors.

Iaijutsu:

Iaijutsu is a form of traditional Japanese swordsmanship emphasising drawing and cutting with the sword. It was developed for use outside of the battlefield. Kenjutsu is a generic term for swordsmanship, and while Iaijutsu deals primarily with offensive or defensive techniques starting from a sheathed position, Kenjutsu deals with techniques and tactics after the sword has been drawn. We teach the sword curriculum of the Dentokan, which includes both Iaijutsu and Kenjutsu drawn primarily from modern military sword methods.
